EXCURSION TO THE NATIONAL PARK KRKA

krkaKrka National Park lies within Šibenik-Knin County, and covers a total area of 109 km² of the loveliest sections of

Krka River, and the lower course of the Čikola River.

The national park is a vast and primarily unaltered area of exceptional natural value, including one or more preserved or insignificantly altered ecosystems. The purpose of the park is primarily to serve science, culture, education and recreation, while tourism activities have also been introduced for its visitors.

Including the submerged part of the river at the mouth,

Krka River is 72.5 km long, making it the 22nd longest river in Croatia. It springs in the foothills of the Dinara mountain range, 2.5 km northeast of Knin. With its seven waterfalls and a total drop in altitude of 242 m, Krka is a natural and karst phenomenon. The travertine waterfalls of Krka River are the fundamental phenomenon of this river.

With its seven travertine waterfalls: Bilušića buk, Brljan, Manojlovac waterfall, Rošnjak, Miljacka waterfall,

Roški waterfall and Skradinski buk, Krka River is a natural and karst phenomenon.

Travertine is a common feature of the surface waters of the Dinaric karst; only the most extraordinary travertine creates significant layers, which build the waterfalls seen on Krka River. The travertine waterfalls of

Krka River are very fragile formations, and are sensitive to environmental change and all human activities.

Only through the constant growth of phytogenic travertine is it possible to ensure the continued survival of the waterfalls that create the hydrogeology and landscape of the park, and form the foundation for its great

biodiversity. The development and growth of the waterfalls is the result of complex physical, chemical and

biological processes. In order for travertine to grow, live and age, it is imperative that the natural balance of

the ecosystem of Krka and Čikola Rivers be preserved.
